“Big Bends”

During a riverboat dinner cruise, a man proposes to his girlfriend. “Big Bends,” a short story now available.

Stephen fidgets with the ring in his pocket and, mumbling, bungles fragments from his index card: Stephen, marry, me, Jo. Staring at the captain’s dining room, he wonders if it has a phone shaped like a whale or a dolphin and if the captain would grab the tail and, speaking into the baleen mouth or bottlenose, call the bridge during an emergency such as when a passenger needs help from his parents and counselor.
